The NFL champ has left his opening game struggles behind him.

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford returned to his roots yesterday, attending Highland Park High School for his jersey retirement.

The Lombardi trophy recipient played for the Highland Park Scots from 2003 to 2006. During that time span, he earned a five-star recruiting grade and won the UIL 4A Division 1 State Championship as a junior in 2005.

Standing beside a framed jersey and plaque listing his accomplishments, Stafford gave a speech at Highlander Stadium during halftime, surrounded by friends and family.

“It’s a special place to be able to play football. I feel very lucky to do that… under coach Allen’s tutelage.”

The undefeated Highland Park next plays Irving this Thursday. Stafford hopes to righten his Los Angeles Rams rough start against an equally flailing Arizona Cardinals squad this Sunday.
