The last weekend of the regular season definitely didn’t disappoint in Katy, Texas at Rhodes Stadium. Morton Ranch came into the game against Seven Lakes needing a win to help their playoff chances, and early on it looked like they would run away with it.
The Mavericks jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead on the legs of Nic Hernandez and Kevon Copeland. The Mavericks dominated the Spartans in the first half on offense and defense. The Spartans offense looked lethargic, only gaining 36 total yards the entire first half compared to the Mavericks 227.
The second looked like it would be a repeat of the first on the Mavericks first drive only take three plays to go 75 yards, finished off by a 68-yard run by Kevon Copeland for his second touchdown in the game. Simon Lueth missed his second extra point that would loom large late in the game to make the score only 19-0. On the next play from scrimmage Chris Williams went 75-yards untouched to get the Spartans on the board and cut into the Maverick lead.
The second half was nothing like the first, both defenses decided to stay in the locker room and just let the offenses have at each other. The Spartans would go on to score another 14 unanswered points and take the lead 21-19 behind a strong performance from Michael Batton. Batton hit JahQuan Bloomfield for a 62-yard touchdown reception and then went 52 yards on the ground himself for what would be Seven Lakes final points.
Kevon Copeland really didn’t want his season to end tonight, rushing for 294 yards and three touchdowns. Morton Ranch ended up winning 32-21 with over 500 yards of total offense. The Spartans finished with 278, but most of that was on a handful of big plays and nothing really consistent.
The Seven Lakes Spartans finish their season at 3-7 overall and 2-5 in district. As for the Morton Ranch Mavericks, they finish 5-5 overall and 4-3 in district, and will take on Fort Bend Ridge Point in the first round of the playoffs next week.
