There ar also plenty of bonuses for the coach to pick up, including an extra $75k for a Big 12 championship, $125k for a College Football Playoff bowl win, and additional bonuses for graduation success rates, and Big 12 or national AP Coach of the Year honors. While Riley will earn about $2 million less than Bob Stoops earned in his final year at the helm, it is significantly more than he earned as offensive coordinator, according to USA Today.
The deal comes after the Sooners’ hot start to the 2017 season under Riley, including a big 31-16 win against Ohio State in week two. OU takes on their second Texas program this Saturday, traveling to Waco to take on Baylor.
Riley hails from Muleshoe, a town of about 5,000 located 68 miles northwest of Lubbock; he helped guide the Mules to a 14-1 record and state semifinal appearance in 2000 as the signal-caller. Riley walked on to Texas Tech, later becoming a student assistant to then head coach Mike Leach. After five seasons as the offensive coordinator at East Carolina, the 34 year old was hired in the same capacity at OU, becoming the head man in just two seasons.
