High School Broadcast Team Banned From Booth
New Braunfels Broadcast Team Kept From Broadcast Booth, Blames Disgraced San Marcos ISD
Despite New Braunfels getting clobbered by Westlake two weeks ago, Unicorns fans took another loss… if they were trying to listen to KGNB/KNBT.
Broadcasters Travis Steel and Ben Campos called the game in the bleachers, broadcasting live through a cell phone. Their portion of the press box remained empty the entire game. For whatever reason, both reporters were barred from the press box in San Marcos. Over the weekend, Steel shared the entire ordeal on social media. The duo is pointing directly at the San Marcos ISD, which has been embroiled in controversy over the last season.
In the post, Steel claims the athletics department at San Marcos ISD wouldn’t allow the duo into the press box at Rattler Stadium. Both men arrived at the stadium several hours before kickoff, only to be denied by a man with a clipboard claiming they weren’t on the media list.
After attempting to speak with former coach Lee Vallejo, who for whatever reason was put in charge of hosting the Area Round of the 6A UIL Playoffs, despite being banned two years for illegally recruiting, the broadcasters realized the snub was intentional.
Steel points to New Braunfels athletic department as the reason Vallejo posts blame on his ban, who was responsible for whistleblowing on the program’s unethical activities.
Most damning, Steel said the following:
“I believe it’s because at some point the athletic department at San Marcos has lost their way and has forgotten that this game is for kids.”
Coach John Walsh, the Athletic Director and Head Coach of the San Marcos Rattlers football team, who was also suspended by the UIL for five games and the playoffs, was also consulted about the snafu. He also prevented KGNB/KNBT from the press box.
Since, he has feigned ignorance on the matter. We recently reported on coach Walsh’s cheating allegations here.
