North Crowley’s 2026 football season just took a major hit before it even reached August.

Five-star cornerback John Meredith III, one of the top recruits in the entire country, has been ruled ineligible for varsity football after a District Executive Committee voted that his transfer from Euless Trinity to North Crowley was for athletic purposes.

The committee reportedly voted 5-2 against Meredith, meaning the Class of 2027 standout is currently blocked from playing varsity football for the Panthers.

That is no small development.

Meredith is widely viewed as one of the best defensive backs in America. He has more than 40 Division I offers and is heavily connected to major national programs, including Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Alabama, Miami, and Notre Dame.

He transferred to North Crowley in January after previously starring at Euless Trinity. North Crowley is coming off a dominant recent run that included a 2024 6A Division I state championship and a roster loaded with college-level talent.

This is where the UIL transfer rule comes in.

In Texas, athletes are not allowed to transfer schools for athletic purposes. If a move is determined to be sports-driven, the student can be ruled ineligible for varsity athletics for one calendar year. Every transfer athlete must complete a Previous Athletic Participation Form, commonly known as a PAPF. If the previous school indicates there may be athletic motivation behind the move, the case can go to a DEC hearing.

The DEC is made up of local school leaders from the district. They review the transfer paperwork, hear from the parties involved, and vote on eligibility.

Meredith and North Crowley can appeal the decision to the UIL State Executive Committee. That gives them another shot, but getting a DEC transfer ruling overturned is never easy. The state committee often gives weight to the local committee’s decision unless there is a strong reason to reverse it.

For now, North Crowley still has a loaded roster. But losing a five-star cornerback with Meredith’s size, speed, and national profile would change the ceiling of almost any defense in Texas.

This story is not finished yet.

But as of now, one of the most talented players in Texas high school football is on the wrong side of the UIL transfer rule.
