Owens Attempts to Lead Cy-Fair to 1st State Title in 7 Years

Round Rock Hail Roof Inspection

The first in-state quarterback commit under UT coach Steve Sarkisian has some unfinished business this fall.

Cy-Fair quarterback Trey Owens put together an impressive junior season, passing for 2,057 yards and 34 touchdowns, earning him the Texas District 17-6A offensive MVP. Yet, the Bobcats were eliminated last year with a 13-10 loss to Cinco Ranch on a last-second field goal.

Owens still aspires to earn a state championship for the school—something they have failed to do in seven years. In fact, the team has only won three playoff games over the last four years.

During the regular season, Owens passed for 2,545 yards and 34 touchdowns, completing 73.1% of his passes. He improved across the board this season, specifically with completion percentage, passing touchdowns per game, and carries per game.

After dropping their first content of the year, Cy-Fair has accounted for nine consecutive victories to close out their regular season tilt.

The team ended the season right, triumphing 27-17 against Memorial last Saturday. The victory secured the Bobcats fifth district championship in seven years. Critical to Owens’ offensive success is senior receiver and Rice commit Owen Carter, who nabbed a laser 50-yard ball to secure Cy-Fair’s district championship.

Owens and the Bobcats now have six games to win, leading to the Class 6A-DI state championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

First up: a Class 6A-Division I bi-district round against Bellaire.

Yet, the Bobcats have one of the toughest paths in the state. If they slip by Bellaire, they will more than likely have to play Katy in the second round. After that, their opponents could include the undefeated North Shore, Shadow Creek, Dickinson, amongst others. Over the past four season, Cy-Fair has lost to a trio of Katy ISD schools and Ridge Point.

Throughout the postseason, the Bobcats anticipate Owens to continue his upward trajectory. When it’s over, the four-star recruit plans on graduating and joining the Burnt Orange for spring training.
