Parkland High School didn’t have to turn too far to find their next head coach. Defensive coordinator Eric Frontz was promoted as the official head coach of the Matadors. He replaces Josh Kirkland, who left last month to take the head coaching job at Kyle Lehman. Per multiple reports, Frontz will be formally introduced at a press conference on Thursday.

During the coaching search, Frontz had been serving as the interim coach of the Matadors for the remainder of spring football and into summer workouts. He does enter the position with previous head coaching experience, serving as the head coach at El Paso Riverside from 2010 to 2015. Frontz compiled a 25-39 record in six seasons.

The new head coach takes over a program that is looking to take the next step after a successful 8-4 season that included a bi-district championship. On defense, he’ll have seniors Nathan Mendoza and Davontey Hankins leading the way up front while he’ll also have junior running back Deion Hankins returning as well in 2017.

During spring football, Frontz was optimistic regarding his team’s outlook for 2017, saying, “We’re just getting back to work and we’re keeping a lot of the things that he (Kirkland) implemented on offense and defense. We have a good thing going right now.”

With the coaching search now over, Frontz will get his chance to put his stamp on the program.

Parkland opens their season at home on September 1 against El Paso Jefferson.
