There are many great quarterbacks in the nation from Texas, but these five are having spectacular seasons. Some are seasoned vets looking to get back to the mountain top and some are still learning all the buildings on campus.
Trevor Knight
A graduate of San Antonio Reagan, Knight is leading Texas A&M in one of their best seasons ever. This will be the one and only season Knight is at the helm for the Aggies since he is a graduate transfer from Oklahoma. Knight is responsible for over 2,000 total yards and 20 touchdowns.
Patrick Mahomes
If Texas Tech had anything resembling a defense or maybe even just a speed bump Mahomes would be getting more recognition, because this guy can sling it. Last week he threw the ball 88 times for 734 yards, and lost. Mahomes had over 800 total yards in the losing effort to Oklahoma. With over 3,500 total yards Mahomes should be getting more recognition.
Baker Mayfield
After walking on to Texas Tech from Lake Travis, Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma and walked on their as well and sent Trevor Knight packing to Texas A&M. I’d say that move has worked out for both parties involved. Mayfield has the Sooners in place to win the Big 12 again with a completion percentage north of 70% and 26 total touchdowns it’s easy to see why the Sooners are undefeated in the Big 12.
JT Barrett
Barrett definitely hasn’t had the usual starting career at Ohio State. Coming from S.H. Rider in Wichita Falls, Barrett has been the starter then not and became the starter. He got his first shot when Braxton Miller went down with a shoulder injury and was having a Heisman type season until he went down with an ankle injury. Up until last week when Penn State beat the Buckeyes, Barrett had his team in prime position to make the College Football Playoff. OSU will most likely still get in with a win over Michigan and winning the Big 10 title. Barrett has close to 2,000 total yards and 23 total touchdowns.
Jalen Hurts
Just your average true freshman leading the number one team in the nation. Out of Channelview Hurts didn’t start the season opener, but played in it. Hurts has been handed the keys to a well oiled machine and has not let it stumble yet. Hurts has over 2,000 total yards with 21 touchdowns. With the defense Alabama has all Hurts has to do is not mess it up and not mess up is what he has done. The teams in the SEC will have at least two more years of seeing Hurts under center for the Tide.
