Port Isabel ISD named Tony Villarreal III as the next athletic director and head football coach for Port Isabel High School on Wednesday. Villarreal is familiar with Port Isabel as he coached the program from 1990-1995 with a 59-13-4 record leading the Tarpons to the Class 3A state semifinals in 1994.
Villareal left Port Isabel for PSJA North where he coached for two seasons. He won a district title in 1997 before heading to Bronsville Hanna; coaching from 1998-2004. From there, Villarreal coached in Weslaco from 2005-2016 before parting ways. Since then, Villarreal has been retired.
With a career record of 200-107-4, Villarreal has coached seventeen district title teams in 27 seasons as a head coach.
Inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2018, Villarreal is quite the legend and will return to coach the Tarpons in a newly aligned 16-4A Division II. Villarreal is Port Isabel’s third head coach since 2017.
