Super Bowl LVII Makes Texas HS Football History

Roof Replacement from Ja-Mar Roofing & Sheet Metal

For the first time in Super Bowl history, two Texas HS Football quarterbacks will go head-to-head. It’s the fourth consecutive year that at least one Texas HS quarterback will represent the NFC or AFC. However, never before in the 57 year history of the modern championship era has two Lone Star standouts called the snaps for their respective teams.

The final game of the postseason will be decided by Jalen Hurts (a Channelview standout) and Patrick Mahomes (a Whitehouse standout). Previously, Matthew Stafford (a Highland graduate) was the frontman for last year’s championship-winning Los Angeles Rams; before that, Mahomes made two consecutive Super Bowl trips.

As a senior with Whitehouse, Mahomes accounted for 4,619 passing yards, 50 passing touchdowns, and 15 rushing touchdowns. He decided to stay local and graduated to a stellar career with Texas Tech.

Hurts attended Channelview under the tutelage of his father, Averion, as his head coach through his senior season. In his last year, Hurts passed for 2,384 yards with 26 touchdown passes and rushed for an additional 25 scores. He was rated as a four-star recruit and turned down Texas A&M for his stint with Alabama.

Both have only played each other once in 2021, where the Chiefs came out as the victor. Mahomes accounted for 24-for-30 for 278 yards and five touchdowns. Hurts wasn’t a slouch, managing a career-high 387 yards and two touchdowns.
