Texas HS Football Graduates Win SB MVP Six Times

As Patrick Mahomes hoisted the MVP trophy, he became the only Texas HS Football player to ever win Super Bowl MVP twice.

In the history of the Super Bowl era, only four other Lone Star athletes earned the honor; it’s also the sixth time the award was claimed by a local football standout.

Since 1967, only Dallas Cowboys defensive end Harvey Martin earned the honor in the 20th century. The South Oak Cliff graduate and Texas Sports Hall Of Fame inductee was responsible for limiting the Denver Broncos to only 156 yards of total offense, keeping his opponent to 2.7 yards per play.

It wasn’t until 2010 that a Texas HS Football star earned Super Bowl glory.

Westlake graduate Drew Brees led the New Orleans Saints to a 31-17 score over the Indianapolis Colts; in total, he threw for 228 yards and two scores.

DeSoto linebacker Von Miller destroyed Cam Newton’s potent Carolina Panthers offense in 2016, forcing two fumbles, and four overall turnovers.

However, he wasn’t the latest SB MVP to triumph from the state’s capital.

That would be Westlake’s Nick Foles, arguably the best backup to win the Super Bowl all-time. Foles went mono-a-mono with GOAT Tom Brady, earning Philadelphia the trophy to the tune of 41-33.

Finally, Whitehouse standout Mahomes did it his first time at the beginning of the decade, leading the Chiefs in a come from behind performance against the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.
