Trask leads Florida over Georgia: Gator senior throws for 4 TDs
Kyle Trask proved to be the life of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party on Saturday.
The Manvel graduate threw for 474 yards and four touchdowns to help the Florida Gators beat the Georgia Bulldogs 44-28 on Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla.
Florida (4-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) took control of the game against Georgia (4-2, 4-2) by going on a 41-7 run and overcoming an early two-touchdown deficit. Trask completed 30 of 43 passes in the contest.
Trask tied the game at 21 with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Pitts in the second quarter and put the Gators ahead to stay with a 24-yard scoring connection to Kemore Gamble midway through the second quarter.
The win helped Florida jump two spots to No. 6 in the latest Associated Press College Football Poll while Georgia fell from fifth to 12th.
More importantly, Florida has the inside track to win the SEC East. The Gators are a half-game ahead of the Bulldogs for the division lead, hold the head-to-head tiebreaker and get a scheduling break since their last five opponents have a combined 9-19 record.
Trask helped Manvel to an 11-3 record as a senior and a berth in the Class 6A, Division II Area Quarterfinals.
Florida hosts Arkansas (3-3) at 6 p.m. Saturday on ESPN.
Davis’ clutch catches helps Irish upset Tigers
You need more than luck to beat the top-ranked team in the nation, you need key plays and senior wide receiver Avery Davis did just that for Notre Dame.
The former Cedar Hill standout had key receptions to help the Fightin’ Irish outlast then then-No. 1 Clemson Tigers 47-40 in double overtime on Saturday.
Notre Dame (7-0, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 in the latest Associated Press College Football Poll. The Irish received two first-place votes while Clemson (7-1, 6-1) dropped to No. 3.
Davis finished with four receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown, but his play downfield helped send the game into overtime.
Davis hauled in a 53-yard reception to help set up the Irish on the Clemson 4-yard-Line inside of a minute left. His four-yard touchdown reception with 22 seconds remaining tied the game at 33-33.
Notre Dame’s football team joined its other major sports in playing in the ACC this season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Irish are in sole possession of first place in thee conference, a half game ahead of Clemson. The teams with the two best conference records will meet in the ACC Championship Game.
Davis played quarterback at Cedar Hill and threw for 2,876 yards and 37 touchdowns as a senior despite missing two games with an ankle injury. He helped Cedar Hill reach the Class 6A, Division II Regional Final.
Notre Dame visits Boston College (5-3, 4-3) at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday on ABC.
King, Miami hold off NC State
D’Eriq King helped the Miami Hurricanes scored the final 13 points of the game to hold off the North Carolina State Wolfpack 44-41 on Friday.
The former Manvel star completed 31 of 41 passes for 430 yards and four touchdowns to go with 105 yards on 15 carries in the road win.
Miami (6-1, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) jumped back into the Top 10 in the latest Associated Press College Football Poll. The Hurricanes went from being ranked 11th to 9th after beating NC State (4-3, 4-3).
The Hurricanes trailed the Wolfpack 41-31 early in the fourth quarter before King led the team on three scoring drives to close out the contest.
He orchestrated scoring drives of 54 and 60 yards to set up Joe Borregales field goals from 38 and 22 yards out to cut into the NC State lead.
Miami took the lead on a five-play, 84-yard scoring drive that was capped by a 54-yard touchdown pass to Mike Harley with 68 seconds remaining. King got the Hurricanes to midfield with a 35-yard completion to Harley on that drive.
The Hurricanes trail Clemson (7-1, 6-1) by a half game for second place in the conference with three games remaining.
King transferred to Miami after playing in at the University of Houston. He threw for 10,000 yards and 3,000 rushing yards at Manvel and earned District 22-6A MVP honors as a senior.
Miami visits Virginia Tech (4-3, 4-2) at 11 a.m. Saturday on ESPN2.
Brown steps up for injury-plagued Cowboys
Redshirt senior running back LD Brown helped the short-handed Oklahoma State Cowboys score 20 unanswered points and escape with a 20-18 road win at Kansas State on Saturday.
Brown rushed for 110 yards on just 50 carries as Oklahoma State (5-1, 4-1 Big 12) held its No. 14 spot in the latest Associated Press College Football Poll after beating Kansas State (4-3, 4-2).
The former DeSoto star got the Cowboys offense going with a 50-yard run in the third quarter that gave Oklahoma State the ball on the Wildcat one-yard-line. Oklahoma State scored three plays later to cut the Kansas State lead to 12-10.
Oklahoma State is in second place in the Big 12 and holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with conference leader No. 17 Iowa State (5-2, 5-1). The Cowboys are a half-game ahead of Kansas State, No. 18 Oklahoma (5-2, 4-2) and No. 21 Texas (5-2, 4-2) for second place.
Brown had 13 touchdowns in nine games as a senior at DeSoto.
The Cowboys will have two weeks to prepare for Bedlam, their annual in-state rivalry game with the Sooners. Oklahoma State visits Oklahoma on Nov. 21.
Overshown, Texas D comes up big in win over West Virginia
In a conference dominated by offense, it was junior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and the Texas defense that stood tall in the Longhorns’ 17-13 home win over the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday.
Overshown finished with eight tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Texas (5-2, 4-2 Big 12) climbed one spot to No. 21 in the latest Associated Press College Football Poll after outlasting West Virginia (4-3, 3-3).
The former Arp star provided arguable the biggest play of the game with a sack of West Virginia quarterback Jarret Doege (Lubbock Cooper) on third down and goal and force the Mountaineers to kick a field goal for the final points of the game.
Overshown and the Texas defense held West Virginia to just 13 points in five trips to the red zone. The Longhorns forced turnovers on downs on the final two defensive series of the game, both of which ended when the Mountaineers could not convert on 4th & 1.
His strong play as a senior at Arp helped Overshown earn Under Armour All-American honors as well as spots on the AP and Texas Sports Writers Association All-State first teams.
Texas is tied with Kansas State (4-3, 4-2) and Oklahoma (5-2, 4-2) for third place in the Big 12, a half-game behind second place Oklahoma State (5-1, 4-1).
The Longhorns visit the Kansas Jayhawks (0-7, 0-6) on Nov. 21.
