Turner-Yell helps Sooners clinch Big 12 Title spot
Junior safety Delarrin Turner-Yell and the Oklahoma Sooners are returning to AT&T Stadium after Oklahoma shut down Baylor 27-14 on Saturday to earn a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game.
The former Hempstead standout made seven tackles and the stingy Oklahoma (7-2, 6-2 Big 12) held Baylor (2-6, 2-6) to just 288 yards of total offense. Oklahoma will be playing for the conference title for the fourth consecutive year.
The Sooners held their spot as the 11th-ranked team in the Associated Press College Football Poll.
Turner-Yell was one of the most sought after defensive back coming out of high school and chose Oklahoma over Houston, Nebraska and Utah.
Oklahoma visits West Virginia (5-4, 4-4) at 11 a.m. Saturday on ABC.
Oklahoma and No. 10 Iowa State (8-2, 8-1) will play for the conference title at 11 a.m. Dec. 19 on ABC. The Cyclones beat the Sooners 37-30 on Oct. 3.
Trask leads Florida to SEC Championship Game
Florida senior quarterback torched another Southeastern Conference defense on Saturday with 433 yards and four touchdowns as the Gators beat the Tennessee Volunteers 31-19 on Saturday.
Florida (8-1, 8-1) clinched the SEC East title with the win over Tennessee (2-6, 2-6) and held its spot at No. 6 in the latest Associated Press College Football poll.
Trask, a Manvel alum, completed 35 of 49 passes and did not turn the ball over. He has thrown 38 touchdowns, the sixth most in SEC history in a single season.
His four-yard touchdown pass to Trevon Grimes gave Florida the lead for good at 10-7 midway through the second quarter.
He capped the Gator scoring by tossing an eight-yard touchdown to Jacob Copeland to make it 31-7 Florida with 11 minutes, 21 seconds remaining.
Trask helped Manvel to an 11-3 record as a senior and a berth in the Class 6A, Division II Area Quarterfinals.
Florida hosts LSU (3-5, 3-5) at 6 p.m. Saturday on ESPN.
The Gators will play No. 1 Alabama (9-0, 9-0) in the SEC Championship Game at 7 p.m. Dec. 19 on CBS.
Moehrig help TCU upset Oklahoma State
Junior safety Trevon Moehrig may not have recorded any yardage on his interception return, but the play went miles in helping the TCU Horned Frogs upset then No. 15 Oklahoma State 29-22 on Saturday.The former Smithson Valley star picked off a Cowboys pass in the end zone to end the Oklahoma State’s late attempt to tie the game.
TCU (5-4, 5-4) knocked Oklahoma State (6-3, 5-3) out of the Associated Press Top 25 after beating the Cowboys.
Moehrig recorded six tackles and two pass break ups.
The Cowboys reached the TCU nine-yard line late in the fourth quarter when Moehrig made the one-handed interception in the end zone to give the Horned Frogs offense the ball.
TCU ends the regular season on at 6 p.m. Saturday against Louisiana Tech (5-3, 4-2 Conference USA) on FS1.
Despite Smith’s strong game, Arkansas falls to Missouri
Junior running back Trelon Smith rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns, but Arkansas fell to Missouri 50-48 on Saturday.
Arkansas (3-6, 3-6 Southeastern Conference) could not hold on to a 14-point lead in the loss to Missouri (5-3, 5-3).
The former Cy Ridge star had 26 carries and averaged more than six yards per carry. He rushed for touchdowns from eight-, 15- and 16-yards out on Saturday. His final score extended the Razorback lead to 40-26 with 13 minutes, 15 seconds remaining.
Smith earned a Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Honorable Mention in 2015 and led Cy Ridge to the Regional Finals. He finished with 4,400 yards and 52 touchdowns during his prep career.
Arkansas hosts No. 1 Alabama (9-0, 9-0) at 11 a.m. Saturday on ESPN.
Thompson shows off in first career start
A key early opt-out in the Texas secondary opened a spot for Jerrin Thompson and he answered the call in the Longhorns 69-31 blowout win at Kansas State on Saturday.
The former Lufkin star was starting in place of Caden Sterns (Cibolo Steele) and recorded his first career interception to help Texas (6-3, 5-3 Big 12) beat Kansas State (4-6, 4-5). The Longhorns jumped back into the Associated Press College Football Poll at No. 23 after the victory.
Thompson returned his interception 21 yards to the Kansas State three-yard line in the first quarter. Longhorns running back Roshon Johnson (Port Neches-Grove) punched it in on the following play to extend UT’s lead to 17-0 with less than five minutes left in the opening frame.
He also had three tackles and a pass break up in the game.
Thomas was a Texas Sports Writer Association All-State Class 5A Honorable Mention in 2018 and a three-time all-district selection. He helped Lufkin make a trip to the Class 6A, Div. II Regional Quarterfinals in 2017.
Texas closes out the regular season at Kansas (0-9, 0-8) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on ESPNU.
