San Antonio’s high school football teams are more than just athletic powerhouses; they are an integral part of the community’s identity. These local athletes’ dedication to excellence on the field sets a high standard and inspires generations of fans. As we celebrate the achievements of these remarkable teams, let’s take a look at Texas high school footballs top high school football programs in the Alamo City:

1. Judson Rockets

Since its founding in 1959, the Judson High School Rockets have consistently been a force to be reckoned with on the football field and have firmly established themselves as one of San Antonio’s premier football programs, winning seasons—from 1977 through 2021. 

The Rockets hold an ongoing Texas state record of 45 consecutive winning seasons. Before 2021, their last losing record occurred in 1976.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Judson’s football history is their six state championships. These titles were won in 1983, 1988, 1992, 1993, 1995, and 2002, cementing their place in Texas high school football lore. 

Notable alumni, such as former NFL player Eric Brown, Jarveon Williams, and Chris Samuels, as well as current NFL star Tre Flowers, have made their mark on the gridiron, carrying the Rockets’ legacy into the professional ranks.

2. Steele Knights

The Steele High School Knights have rapidly risen to prominence in San Antonio’s high school football landscape.

Established in 2006, the Knights wasted no time in making their presence felt. Since 2017, under the guidance of head coach David Saenz, they have consistently been a contender in the Texas high school football playoffs. Saenz’s emphasis on discipline, toughness, and character development has been instrumental in the team’s success.

Steele High School boasts a state championship win in 2010 and has been a perennial playoff contender since then. Besides their first season, Steele has never missed the playoffs. 

3. Reagan Rattlers

Reagan High School’s football program has produced notable alumni, including former NFL players Trevor Knight, Ty Summers, and Kellen Mond.

Since 2004, the Rattlers have only missed the playoffs twice, including six 11+ win seasons. Despite their excellence, and their penchant for deep playoff runs, Reagan has yet to win a state championship, often falling to Judson or Steele.

So far, their undefeated 2023 season start is one of their best, making this Rattlers team poised to finally take home the gold.

4. O’Connor Panthers

The Sandra Day O’Connor High School Panthers have been steadily climbing the ranks of San Antonio high school football. 

The Panthers have been on a continuous journey of improvement. Head coach David Malesky, who has been with the team since 2013, has instilled a winning mentality in his players. Their commitment to hard work and preparation has paid off with numerous playoff appearances.

O’Connor High School has seen its share of talented players, with many earning scholarships to play football at the collegiate level.

5. Churchill Chargers

The Winston Churchill High School Chargers have a rich football tradition that spans decades.

The Chargers’ football program has a history of producing talented athletes who have gone on to succeed at the college and professional levels. Notable alumni include former NFL players Glenn Blackwood, Lyle Blackwood, and Alex Van Pelt.

In 1976, the team claimed their lone championship—the 4A state championship in 1976, 

Since 2015, under the leadership of head coach Ron Harris, the Chargers have continued to uphold their tradition of excellence.
