Triston Abron set to take over at Mexia after making state-title run at Paul Pewitt

It took almost two months, but Mexia is moving on.

The Black Cats have been searching for a new head coach since Jan. 8, when Frank Sandoval stepped down from the position, but the process came to a close Monday morning.

Mexia ISD announced via tweet a new era is underway following the hiring of Triston Abron.

Abron makes a leap to Class 4A after guiding Paul Pewitt to the Class 3A, Division II state championship game last season. The Brahmas finished with a 14-2 overall record, averaging 41.5 points per game.

He inherits a program that went 15-18 in three years under Sandoval. The Black Cats were 7-4 last season, advancing to the area round of the playoffs.

Mexia finished second in the District 8-4A, Division II standings, but the Black Cats will compete in District 7-4A, Division II for the next two seasons along with Brownsboro, Bullard, Canton and Van.
