King of Miami: Former Manvel star leads Miami over Louisville
D’Eriq King brought some Lone Star State flair to the season’s first matchup between ranked teams on Saturday leading the Miami Hurricanes to a 47-34 road win at Louisville.
King, a former Manvel star, completed 18 of 30 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns to help Miami (2-0) open Atlantic Coast Conference play with a win while Louisville (1-1) started league play with a loss.
King transferred to Miami after player in at the University of Houston. He threw for 10,000 yards and 3,000 rushing yards at Manvel and earned District 22-6A MVP honors as a senior.
Miami hosts rival Florida State at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday on ABC.
Green IV gets Interception in Near-upset
Allie Green IV did his part to help the Tulsa Golden Hurricane give No. 15 Oklahoma State all it could handle in a 16-7 road loss on Saturday.
The Cowboys were behind Tulsa 7-3 late in the third quarter and marched to the Tulsa 26 when Green IV picked off Oklahoma State quarterback Ethan Bullock to give Tulsa the ball on its own 29.
Green IV finished with five tackles, including a tackle for loss in the season opener for both teams. He was a three-year letterman at Austin LBJ and a Class 5A all-state first team selection.
Tulsa visits Arkansas State (1-1) at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday on ESPN2.
Harvell-Peel Helps OSU Hold off Tulsa
The Oklahoma State Cowboys escaped with a 16-7 season-opening victory over Tulsa thanks in part to a key play from A&M Consolidate’s Kolby Harvell-Peel.
Harvell-Peel intercepted a pass by Tulsa quarterback Zach Smith with seven seconds left in the game to end an threat of a Golden Hurricane upset. He had three tackles, including a tackle, and a pass breakup to go with the six-yard interception return.
He posted 61 tackles his senior year at A&M-Consolidated.
The Cowboys open Big 12 play at home on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against the West Virginia Mountaineers (1-0).
Vitt Leads Bobcats to First Win
Tyler Vitt had three total touchdowns to help Texas State get in the win column with a 38-17 road victory at Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday.
Vitt, a former San Antonio MacArthur standout, completed 14 of 21 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 11 times for 91 yards and a score for Texas State (1-2, 0-1). Texas State took control of the game by scoring 17 unanswered points in a seven-minute first-half stretch against ULM (0-3, 0-1).
Vitt and the Bobcats visit Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Boston College (1-0).
He was a three-year started who threw for more than 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior at MacArthur.
Buechele, SMU Light up Scoreboard against UNT
Shane Buechele and the SMU Mustangs dominated the North Texas Mean Green 65-35 on Saturday in Denton.
The Arlington Lamar alum completed 24 of 33 passes for 344 yards and four touchdown while rushing for 40 yards and another score on five carries. SMU (2-0) holds a 33-6-1 edge all-time against UNT (1-1).
Buechele threw for more than 6,000 yards and 73 touchdowns in high school and was a two-time Associated Press Class 6A All-State selection.
SMU hosts Stephen F. Austin (0-2) on Saturday.
