The State Executive Committee of the University Interscholastic League will meet at 9 a.m. today at the Austin Marriott North in Round Rock in order to discuss a variety of cases brought to their attention. The cases that will be looked at and determined regard the eligibility of various student-athletes’ rule violations.
The first item on the hearing agenda is a discrepancy against football head coach Jeremy Phillips of Zephyr High School who was ejected from a contest earlier this year. This hearing falls into the UIL Athletics Constitution Section 1208(i)(1) which states “any coach who is ejected from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct…during a contest may accept an automatic penalty for their ejection or appeal the ejection.”
If the appeal is not overturned, Phillips may be subject to a public reprimand and one year’s probation, an order to complete the National Federation of State High School Associations Fundamentals of Coaching Course, or an order to complete the National Federation of State High School Associations Teaching and Modeling Behavior Course. The following four hearings involved eligibility of student athletes who are accused of changing schools for athletic purposes. The schools in question of violation are: Brownsville Veterans Memorial High School (District 32-5A), Houston Yates High School (District 23-4A), Detroit High School (District 15-2A), and Navasota High School (District 26-4A). The violation is against section 443 of the UIL Athletic Constitution.
According to section 443, students are required to attend schools based on their attendance areas. The District Executive Committee will determined whether or not a student changed schools for athletic purposes. The State Executive Committee meeting is an open meeting. All parties interested in the hearings mentioned are welcomed to attend.
