4A Team of the Week: Alvarado Indians
Alvarado arguably pulled off the upset of the week as it came out of nowhere to stun Stephenville, the number two team in 4A Division I.
Yet, heading into the fourth quarter, any chance of an upset looked minimal at best as Alvarado trailed the Yellowjackets 49-28.
Alvarado sophomore quarterback Cardea Collier had other ideas as he delivered a 19-yard strike to Calvin Ford before finding Lance Sansom for a 42-yard score to cut the deficit to seven.
With the clock ticking down under a minute, Alvarado had one last rabbit to pull out of its hat. Cassius Johnson scored on a seven-yard touchdown run before Indians head coach Casey Walraven made the call to keep the offense on the field
Just as he had been doing throughout the fourth quarter, Collier delivered, finding Kaden Ford for the game-winning two-point conversion.
Collier finished with 301 yards passing and three touchdowns, while also adding 127 yards and three scores on the ground.
With the 50-49 victory, Alvarado picked up its first win in district play on the season, improving to 1-2 in its five team district.

Now all that’s standing in the way of Alvarado’s first playoff trip since 2019 is a showdown against Life Waxahachie this Thursday.
It’s a matchup with massive postseason implications as the winner will go to the playoffs, while the loser will see their season end.
