2A Team of the Week: Plains Cowboys
Plains and Smyer battled in a seesaw of a football game on Friday.
With the teams occupying the fourth and fifth places in District 4-2A Division II, the winner of the contest would head to the playoffs.
Plains got off to a hot start, taking an early 25-6 lead in the second quarter behind three passing touchdowns from junior quarterback Tyler Vargas.
Unfazed, Smyer came fighting back with 30 unanswered points as quarterback Peyton Casillas threw for two scores and Shawn Barrett added two more scores on the ground.
But down 36-25 with a ticket to the playoffs on the line, Plains didn’t go down without a fight. With five minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Vargas found Gavin Broome for a nine-yard touchdown to cut Smyer’s lead back down to one possession.
That set up a thrilling final drive.
With just 33 ticks left on the clock, facing third-and-goal, Vargas and the Plains offense delivered one last big play.
Vargas rolled to his right, finding his receiver Adrian Contreras in the corner of the end zone for a seven-yard touchdown to seal a wild 37-36 victory and the final playoff spot.
With the win, Plains is now headed to the playoffs for the third year in a row.
