Six-Man Team of the Week: Van Horn Eagles

Van Horn came into its week two matchup against Balmorhea as 39-point underdogs.

A year ago, the Eagles fell just short against the Bears 50-48.

But not this year. Van Horn scored a signature win, edging out Balmorhea 46-42 last Friday. Much of the credit has to go to Eagle senior running back Cy Garcia. He stole the show with 340 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 39 attempts.

Gabriel Gonzalez had Van Horn’s other touchdown on a two-yard run, while quarterback Leeland Perry finished with 61 yards passing.

The game was a back-and-forth affair featuring five lead changes. At one point in the second quarter, Balmorhea jumped out to a 30-14 lead although Garcia reeled the Bears back in with 10 and 59-yard touchdowns to tie proceedings up at 30 heading into halftime.

And while Garcia scored two touchdowns for the Eagles after the interval, Balmorhea also had two touchdowns of its own. The difference in the game ended up being the two extra points made in the second half by Eagle kicker Roberto Estrada.

Defensively, Garcia also led the Eagles with 14.5 total tackles.

After such a monumental victory, Van Horn will get its first home game of the year this week as it plays host to Immanuel Christian on Friday at 7:30.
