4A Team of the Week: Iowa Colony Pioneers
Iowa Colony is a brand-new high school that just opened in Alvin ISD this past August. That means there are only freshmen and sophomores on its varsity football team.
Evidently, that youthfulness didn’t matter on Friday night.
The Pioneers looked to be heading for an upset late in the fourth quarter against Navasota up 27-19 until Navasota quarterback Hudson Minor connected with Jaeveon Graves for a 24-yard score. On the ensuing play, Rattler running back Deontray Scott ran in the two-point try for the tying score that would eventually send the game to overtime.
Navasota struck first in the extra period, but despite its lack of experience on the varsity level, Iowa Colony wasn’t rattled.
The Pioneers answered with a 12-yard touchdown before Iowa Colony head coach Ray Garza made the call to go for two to try and earn the school’s first ever win against a UIL opponent.
Pioneer quarterback Kamal Henry dropped back to pass before eventually deciding to take it himself up the middle for the conversion and a historic victory for the school.

Iowa Colony came into the game as 22-point underdogs, but 159 yards passing and 95 yards rushing by Henry helped the Pioneers pull off the massive upset.
Iowa Colony now sits at 2-5 on the year and will have another big test this Friday as it travels to El Campo.
