2A Team of the Week: Trenton Tigers

From 1958-2011, Trenton didn’t even have a football program.

Since the Tigers brought a varsity team back in 2012, they have had a couple 3-0 starts, but this year they started 4-0 for the first time since the sport’s return.

The question is could they keep that momentum going in their district opener against Whitewright. The answer was a resounding yes. After trailing 16-6 at halftime, the Tigers rallied to knock off Whitewright 33-29.

Quarterback Nolan Yowell accounted for four second half touchdowns, including the go-ahead score on a one-yard run with under two minutes to go.

“Our kids never wavered. They stayed together, kept believing in each other, and eventually found a way. I think that’s probably what impressed me the most,” Trenton head coach Andrew Raiden said. “It wasn’t perfect, but when things weren’t going our way, our kids continued to fight and found a way to finish.”

Yowell was far from the only playmaker offensively. Ethan Greer had six catches for 102 yards and a touchdown, while running back Landry Bowman had 14 carries for 128 yards. Jett Henley led the Tiger defense with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Trenton has not had a winning season in 11-man football since 1937, but with this year’s 5-0 start, there’s a sense something special is building. Still, the Tigers aren’t getting ahead of themselves ahead of district game number two at Wolfe City this Friday.

“ There’s a lot of pride surrounding these kids and this program right now, and we’re extremely thankful for that,” Raiden said. “At the same time, our message hasn’t changed. We’re going to keep taking it one day at a time, trusting the process, and working every day to live up to the standard we’ve set for ourselves.”
