Six-Man Team of the Week: Gold-Burg Bears
Gold-Burg has shown no signs of slowing down despite a head coaching change this offseason. According to new head coach Christian Healer, Gold-Burg is off to the first 5-0 start in program history. From 2004-2022, the Bears won five games in an entire season just twice.
This past Friday, they scored their most impressive win of the year in a 64-50 victory at Saint Jo.
Jayon Grace was the motor for the offense with 164 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Levi Hellinger also threw for 92 yards and two touchdowns, while Paul Jones finished with four catches for 54 yards and both of Gold-Burg’s touchdown receptions.
Aidan Foster was Gold-Burg’s primary playmaker on defense. He had seven tackles, four for loss, and a fumble returned for a touchdown.
With such a positive start to the season, Healer said his players deserve praise for the way they’ve bought into the winning culture he’s trying to instill at Gold-Burg.
“They want to be different from any other Gold-Burg team. That’s really been the saying this year,” Healer said. “The teams before haven’t done anything wrong. It’s just that if we want to start a program here, we got to make it different now so that we can start being the team that is a playoff team or goes a couple rounds deep every year. I feel like we have something special going on this year, and I hope we can show everyone else that!”
Gold-Burg will get another great chance to show off its progress this Thursday as the Bears take on perennial state contender Motley County at Northside this Thursday.
