1A Six Man
Week Four 1A Team of the Week: Claude Mustangs
1A Team of the Week: Claude Mustangs
The price of admission to Claude’s showdown with Groom last Friday was worth every penny.
The Mustangs and Tigers played out a six-man classic with four touchdowns in the last two minutes of the game.
Claude’s final drive was a heart-stopper. With the Mustangs trailing 62-58, they had the ball at the Groom 11. Claude head coach Brantlee Lemons said his staff asked the Mustang players whether they wanted to try a game-tying field goal, worth four points in six-man, or go for the win. According to Lemons, “All the players on the field wanted to go for the win.”
Quarterback Holden Tice took it himself and although he came up short, Groom grabbed his facemask, so the Mustangs got another chance. On the next play, Tice looked for Korbin Jackson, and despite that pass falling incomplete, Groom was flagged for pass interference.
Finally, the third time was the charm for the Mustangs. Yet again, Tice took it himself, leaping into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown to seal a 64-62 win that will live long in the memory of the Mustangs.
Tice threw for 211 yards and four touchdowns on the night while adding another 61 yards and two scores on the ground. Thomas Slack was another big player for the Mustangs. He rushed for 94 yards and a score, while catching three passes for 55 yards and two more touchdowns.
Trapper Godfrey also had two touchdown receptions, while Jackson had a touchdown run on his lone carry of the night.
A year ago, the Mustangs finished 3-7. They’ve already matched that win total this season with three one-possession victories the past three weeks. They’ll look to keep that winning momentum going when they travel to Amarillo San Jacinto Christian this Friday.
