Six-Man Team of the Week: Vernon Northside Indians

Northside head coach Galen Smart has seen a lot. After all, he’s a 6-Man Hall of Fame coach. But even with all of his years of experience, he considers his team’s 32-31 victory over Silverton last Thursday as one of the most exciting wins in his entire career.

In a back-and-forth contest, the Indians relied on their special teams to win them the game. They missed the PAT on their first four touchdowns. However, after a score to cut Silverton’s lead to 31-30 late in the contest, Northside kicker Daniel Anita rose to the occasion. He booted through the point after kick to give Northside the 32-31 lead. From there, the Indian defense held on for a signature win in a game where they were regarded as heavy underdogs.

The players played hard, never giving up,” Smart said. “The players trusted each other throughout the game. It was one that anyone who likes competitive football should have been there.  It was a great win to come back from a defeat the week before.”

Freshman Rance Teague was at the center of Northside’s offensive effort, finishing with 131 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Sophomore Bryson Fry and senior Taylor Tucker also scored touchdowns for the Indian offense.

Defensively, Braydon Borland and Fry each finished with seven solo tackles. They also each had an interception that ended sustained Silverton drives.

Northside will be hoping for some more success on the road this week. They’ll travel to face Hedley this Friday at 7:30.
