4A Team of the Week: Snyder Tigers

Anthony Gonzales came into Snyder ready to work.

“We are three years into this program under my leadership as the head coach, and I knew when I was blessed with the opportunity to lead the Snyder Tiger football program that it would get worse before it got better,” Gonzales said. “I have been blessed to lead two rebuilds, and both have followed that same path.”

For Snyder, the question remained: when would things get better on the scoreboard?

It didn’t look like last Friday would be the night its 21-game losing streak would end. The Tigers were 22-point underdogs against Andrews, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

But from the moment he took over, Gonzales preached about “Fanatical Effort.” On Friday, it shone through.

The Tigers won a slugfest of a football game 8-3 over Andrews. Snyder limited the Mustangs to just 39 passing yards and 40 rushing yards on 40 carries.

“Physically and from a depth standpoint, we were outmatched by our opponent, but our kids refused to allow the other team to play harder than them,” Gonzales said. “The end result was in our favor, but more importantly, our kids earned that win. Our assistant coaches earned that win. Everyone in our program poured into that moment, and we could not be more proud of them.”

Linebacker Keshaun Lenard led that defensive effort with 17 tackles and two tackles for loss. Defensive lineman Uriel Murillo Hernandez also pitched in with 10 tackles and two tackles for loss.

Offensively, running back Tyson Burleson rushed for 82 yards and had the game’s lone touchdown while sophomore quarterback Wade Stansell threw for 120 yards.

“We are proud of where we are right now,” Gonzales said. “Now the challenge is to replicate that effort every Friday night for the remainder of the season. That will be incredibly hard to do, but our kids now know what Fanatical Effort looks like. They know what it feels like. They know what they are capable of when they give everything they have.”

They’ll get their next chance to showcase that effort this Friday when they travel to Sweetwater for their final non-district game.
