Six-Man Team of the Week: Dawson Dragons

It’s not easy being one of the smallest football-playing schools in the state. As of UIL realignment, Dawson had just 32 students in high school.

Last year, due to low numbers, the Dragons were unable to field a varsity football team. However, they’re back this year and last Friday, they were rewarded for their patience and hard work. The Dragons beat Lazbuddie 40-32 for their first win since August 2022. It was their first victory over a varsity UIL opponent since October 2016.

“Getting a win, after the long drought of losses… it shows our kids that it can be done and that Dawson has a great future ahead of it,” Dawson head coach Jay Bingham said. “It started with our kids showing up day in and day out at 6am, having a work-like mentality, and persevering through years of disappointment. I’m super proud of all these kids. And beyond that I’m super proud for our little community.”

Roman Trevino was all over the field for the Dragons. He racked up 115 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and 72 yards and two more scores as a receiver. Defensively, he finished with 15 tackles.

Elsewhere on offense, Devon Armendariz threw for 146 yards and both those scores to Trevino. He also had a 41-yard touchdown catch. Jake Morado also finished with a passing and rushing touchdown.

Despite the magnitude of their accomplishment, the Dragons won’t spend too long celebrating this win. They have a tough test to prepare for with Amherst coming to town this Thursday at 7:00.
