Westlake Dominates New Braunfels

New week, same old Chaparrals.

Top-ranked Westlake — Maxpreps.com’s handpicked No. 3 team in the nation — steamrolled its way to a 36th consecutive victory Friday night after demolishing New Braunfels 70-7 in a Class 6A Division II area playoff game at San Marcos High School’s Toyota Rattler Stadium.

Head coach Todd Dodge’s team was once again unstoppable on offense and also put up a brick wall defensively in front of a very efficient Unicorn attack. Westlake (12-0) scored touchdowns on each of its first 10 possessions while limiting New Braunfels (9-3) to 195 yards of offense and just six first downs on the night.

Meanwhile, the Chaps cruised to 575 yards of offense and 32 first downs while rotating in plenty of reserves during the second half.

First Half

Senior quarterback Cade Klubnik was dialed in from the opening drive, as he found Keaton Kubecka for a 33-yard TD strike to cap a quick five-play march. The Clemson commit added scoring tosses of 34 and 27 yards to Brett Skinner and Pierce Turner, respectively, to give the Chaps a 21-0 edge after one-quarter of play.

Westlake’s surge continued with 7-yard TD run by Jack Kayser early in the second period, and the Unicorns’ offense answered with their lone highlight of the night — a 73-yard scoring pass from Aiden Baumann to Lance Beeghley.

The Chaparrals responded with another 21-point flurry before the half ended. Kayser ended a 67-yard drive with a 12-yard burst into the end zone, and Klubnik capped back-to-back possessions with rushing scores of 1 and 12 yards.

The final march of the first half saw Westlake move 57 yards in just 20 seconds to seize a 49-7 edge. Klubnik darted up the middle for a score on his last snap of the evening, as backup Christian Edgar directed the offense in the second half with the outcome of the game no longer in question.

Second Half

The Chaps’ Nathan Acosta tacked on TD runs of 3 and 18 yards during the third quarter, and Westlake saw Kamsi Nzeribe provide the contest’s final points on a 1-yard scoring plunge midway through the fourth period.

Klubnik finished the game 13 of 16 passing for 243 yards and three scores and also ran for 54 yards and two scores. Kayser finished with 98 yards and two TDs on 18 carries, and Acosta added another 83 yards and two scores on 10 attempts.

Kubecka led the receiving corps with 62 yards and a TD on four receptions.

Westlake now advances to face Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North in the regional round of the 6A Division II postseason.
