5 Super Bowl MVPs from Texas

Patrick Mahomes became the 5th former Texas high school football player to win the NFL Super Bowl MVP last year.   The first Super Bowl was in 1967 and since then there have been 5 Super Bowl MVPs from Texas, including 3 of the last 5.

The first Super Bowl MVP from Texas was in Super Bowl XII, Co-MVP Harvey Martin. He shared the award with Randy White.  Martin was a defensive end for the Cowboys. He played high school football at South Oak Cliff, which was the first integrated high school in Dallas Texas.  He went on to play for Texas A&M University- Commerce.  He was a 4-time Pro Bowl selection and one time First Team All NFL selection.  The Cowboys beat the Broncos, 27-10, in that Super Bowl. It was the first time a defensive lineman had won the MVP.

The second MVP from Texas was not until Super BOWL XLIV in 2010.  The MVP was Drew Brees.  Brees played high school football at Austin Westlake. He then went to Purdue for college.  In Super Bowl XLIV, he outplayed Peyton Manning, and thanks to a little help from special teams and an onside kick, the Saints beat the Colts 31-17.  Brees was 32-39 for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The third MVP from Texas came six years later in Super Bowl 50.  Von Miller and the great Denver Broncos defense, with an offense led by Peyton Manning, dominated the Carolina Panthers, 24-10.   Von Miller played high school football at DeSoto High School and college football for the Texas A&M Aggies. Miller had 2.5 sacks in the Super Bowl and forced two fumbled, the second of which sealed the victory for the Broncos.

The fourth MVP from Texas came just two years later in Super Bowl LII.  Nick Foles, replacing an injured Caron Wentz, led the Philadelphia Eagles on an improbably Super Bowl run to face Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.  Foles played high school football at Austin Westlake.  He played college football for one year at Michigan State before going to play for the Arizona Wildcats.  Foles led the Eagles to a 41-33 Super Bowl win. Foles threw for 373 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown on the “Philly Special,” play.

The fifth Super Bowl MVP from the state of Texas was Patrick Mahomes, last year.  Mahomes played high school football at Whitehouse and college football at Texas Tech.  He threw for 286 yards and 2 touchdowns while also running for a touchdown.  He led the Chiefs to a 31-20 comeback win over the San Francisco 49ers.
