North Texas primed to bounce back versus Old Dominion

DENTON, Texas — Coming off one of the school’s worst losses in recent memory, the Mean Green have a good chance of getting back in the win column this week.

North Texas (4-3, 3-1 C-USA) lost its first conference game 69-31 on the road against FAU, allowing 804 total yards from scrimmage. That set a record for the most yards in a single game in FAU program history.

Luckily for the Mean Green, Old Dominion (2-5, 0-3 C-USA) does not have a potent offense. They have averaged only 19 points per game, which ranks in the bottom 10 of all Division I football teams.

Still, if ODU can get things going at some point, don’t be surprised if it comes against UNT. North Texas has allowed at least 28 points in all but one of their games this season and have allowed more than 40 points three times.

The result of the game will likely be decided by each team’s workhorse running backs. Senior Jeffrey Wilson is putting together a stellar season for North Texas, ranking second in Conference-USA in rushing yards (798) and touchdowns (10) so far. Old Dominion’s Jeremy Cox doesn’t boast great stats but is undoubtedly a do-it-all player for his team. Cox leads the team in rushing yards and receptions – if he can get going against a subpar defense, ODU could turn the game into a shootout.

Expect Mean Green quarterback Mason Fine to have a big game. Even in last week’s loss, he was still able to throw for 283 yards and two touchdowns. He’ll be facing an ODU defense that has allowed at least 35 points five games in a row. Jalen Guyton, Fine’s favorite target, should be in for another huge stat line as well.

North Texas has a chance to solidify themselves as one of the favorites in C-USA with a convincing win on Saturday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Apogee Stadium in Denton.
