The Texas high school football community is mourning the loss of Leyton Hernandez, a teacher and multi-sport coach at Veterans Memorial High School in Corpus Christi, who died in a two-vehicle crash. He was 28.
Hernandez was traveling outside the Coastal Bend region when the accident occurred. Authorities are continuing to investigate the details surrounding the crash.
Corpus Christi Independent School District confirmed the news and asked the community to support the Hernandez family and the Veterans Memorial campus during this difficult time. Crisis counselors will be available for students and staff when schools reopen.
Hernandez was in his fifth year teaching and coaching at Veterans Memorial, where he worked with multiple sports programs and built strong relationships with student-athletes.
A graduate of King High School, Hernandez played college football at Texas A&M–Kingsville before transferring to Texas State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 2020.
He is survived by his parents, CCISD Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez and Dr. Cynthia Hernandez, and his sister, Lauren Stinson.
Visitation is scheduled for March 20 in Corpus Christi.
