The Most Surprising Score Of The Night
Lubbock Coronado 49, Andrews 28
It’s not that I didn’t expect Coronado to be competitive, I just didn’t think they’d win like this. Andrews scored first, but Coronado controlled the rest of the game with a blistering offense. This wasn’t even as close as the final score says it was, Coronado was up 48-14 at one point.

Midland Greenwood 52, Seminole 50
This one was tight for the duration, but Midland Greenwood pulled it out despite giving up 50 points.

On first glance, you think that this is just a normal picture. Then you see the hashtag on the back of Naaman Forest’s jerseys. This is a very efficient way of branding your football team and letting us know what hashtag to use when we tweet about them.
Five Teams I Really Like
Midland High
Midland’s only loss this year is to DFW powerhouse DeSoto, and the Eagles needed to come back in order to win it. Midland got a key victory last night over Wolfforth Frenship, and turned what was thought to be a two horse race between Odessa Permian and San Angelo Central for the 2-6A crown into a trifecta.
Austin Vandegrift
It’s easy to look at Vandegrift’s 2-4 record and write them off as a lost cause. When you look at their murderer’s row of a schedule, it seems more plausible. They played Odessa Permian and Cedar Park in non district competition, and took a loss to Austin Westlake in district play. Their other loss was to a currently 4-2 Harker Heights team on the road, and it was only by a single point. This weekend the Vipers got the offense going to pair with their devastating defense, and everyone in the Austin area should be worried about this team putting it all together.
Lubbock Monterey
Don’t look now, but the teams from the Lubbock area are very, very good. Frenship has struggled, but Lubbock Cooper, Lubbock Monterey, and Lubbock Coronado are all undefeated, and none of those records are by accident. All of these teams are preforming either adequately or amazingly, and Monterey’s victory over Stephenville should be lauded.
Malakoff
They’re 5-0 and scoring around 50 points a game, including last night’s 62-28 pounding of Groesbeck. They’re going to need this momentum to continue, but I really like their chances going forward.
The Woodlands
We knew they could stop people from scoring, we didn’t know they could score in bunches too. On a night where their defense was less than optimal, the Highlanders dropped 63 on Lufkin to take home a district win. They’ve beaten Katy, they’re in the driver’s seat in their district, and they should have a preferable playoff slate.
Other Things That Should Be Mentioned
Cedar Hill comes back to beat Duncanville – Duncanville came in undefeated and looking to challenge for one of the top two spots in one of the toughest districts in the state. The Longhorns were down by over 20 before pulling out the win.
Carroll bests Trinity – The Dragon defense stepped up in the second half to take home a big district win over a massive Euless Trinity squad.
Alief Taylor wins a close one – Pearland went up 14-0 to start the game, but Taylor ended up rattling off 19 points to take home a victory against a tough Pearland squad. We’re going to really wonder “what if?” if Pearland makes it three or four rounds deep in the playoffs with the injuries they’ve had to their quarterbacks.
What’s wrong with George Ranch? – No one predicted that they’d be undefeated heading into playoffs, but I don’t think we expected a .500 record after six games. The Longhorns are going to have to step it up if they want to compete in 6A.
