Report: Raiders Flying In Garrett Gilbert To Play On Practice Squad

It’s been a winding road for Garrett Gilbert, the former Lake Travis star and Longhorn quarterback. His final days at SMU ended up being productive, but most of his collegiate career didn’t pan out as he had planned.

Gilbert was drafted in the 6th round of the 2014 draft by the Rams, but couldn’t make the team and was signed to the practice squad. Since then, he’s bounced around the country before landing with the Raiders in 2016. He was waived from their practice squad earlier in the year, but according to Ian Rapoport, after the injuries to Derek Carr and Matt McGloin the Raiders are taking him back, and might activate him for their playoff game against the Texans.

The Raiders are the 12-win team, but they’re still the underdogs since they’re on their third-string quarterback. Gilbert will provide some depth, but barring some very unfortunate and extreme circumstances for the Raiders, it’s unlikely that he’ll see much of the gridiron.
