Last year, Texas Tech’s offensive line was average at best, and abysmal at its absolute worst. Today, Bruce Feldman reports that they have shored up the trenches by adding a new coach – former Cal offensive line coach Brandon Jones.

While at Texas Tech, Jones was a Rimington Award candidate, an award given out to the nation’s top center. In his only full season as a starter (2005), he helped lead Texas Tech to a 9-3 record and to the 20th spot in the AP final rankings. At that point, Texas Tech had lead the nation in passing for the fourth year in a row.

Jones doesn’t just have serious Texas Tech ties and the rep of being an excellent player in college, his offensive lines have been great at well. Cal was one of the top 10 offenses in the nation, and according to the advanced statistics from FootballOutsiders.com, Cal had a really good offensive line as well.

All in all, if this hire goes through, it’ll be a great pickup for Texas Tech. They desperately need help across the offensive line, and with the influx of talent from this recruiting class (Jack Anderson, Dawson Deaton, etc), they should be improved very, very soon.
