1. Only one more week of faux football before we get to the real football.
As always, one thought should always be that 7 on 7 acumen should never be taken as a direct parallel to real football. Obviously there are some parallels, and we can dissect them and talk about them, but in the real world where real games are played, anything can happen.
2. Waco Midway will live and die by Tanner Mordecai, and I’m sold on it.
Here’s the thing about Waco Midway’s senior gunslinger – he’s going to be aggressive. He’s going to force some balls into double coverage, he might underthrow a difficult spot, and he’s definitely going to try and hit that route over the middle that leads directly into the free safety, who is waiting for a hit.
This can often be a bad thing, but Mordecai does it well. On Friday, he had some throws that were legitimately incredible, and not just in the context of “oh man that was 7 on 7 great throw”, as in he dropped it just over the heads of double coverage to the man streaking behind who had beaten them. He has the aggression to be good, now he just needs to be consistent.
3. Mordecai was great, and there was some other great quarterback play, but the best performance came from Hutto’s Chase Griffin
If you’re in the area you should already know about Chase Griffin. If you don’t know about him, well, give it a couple months.
The Austin American-Statesman All-Central Texas Newcomer of the year will just be a junior, and it’s easy to see why Hutto already qualified for State with him at the helm. He was cool under pressure and has the ability to take you deep if you try to press him. After watching him, I can safely say that a Hutto game will be well worth the price of admission.
4. Lake Travis’s Garrett Wilson is unreal
Not much else to be said here. He’s fast, he can catch, and his routes are crisp. Given LT’s wide open style and Matthew Baldwin looking comfortable as a passer, he’s going to do numbers.

Hmmmm I’d have to say baldwin by far out played Tanner M. And doing so with mostly incoming sophomores on his team. The midway QB barely completed a pass against LT’s incoming sophomore D. But hey, we are used to people jumping on the bandwagon once people have a major D1 offer or commit. It’s the same phenomenon of teams offering an athlete just becasue someone else did….
