After losing to UCLA in a historic collapse on Sunday night, Texas A&M may have lost moving forward for the rest of the season. According to head coach Kevin Sumlin, starting quarterback Nick Starkel and safety Donovan Wilson both had surgery on Monday and will be out “a long time”. Sumlin made the announcement on his weekly radio show.

Starkel and Wilson were both injured on Sunday night in the Rose Bowl against the Bruins. Per Sumlin, Starkel is out with a broken ankle while Wilson also had a foot injury. The loss of both players will have a significant impact on each side of the ball.

With Starkel out, the Aggies turned to true freshman Kellen Mond, who struggled in his first college game. He will likely be the starter this week with senior Jake Hubenak backing him up.

Wilson’s loss is a blow to a secondary that was considered a strength of the Texas A&M defense. A significant number of true freshman were able to get playing time on Sunday night and they could be counted on to fill the void that the senior from Louisiana leaves behind.

Texas A&M has two home games against Nicholls State and Louisiana-Lafayette before starting SEC play against Arkansas at AT&T Stadium on September 23.
