CYPRESS, Texas- The Cy-Ranch Mustangs entered Thursday’s tilt with the Cy-Fair Bobcats riding a 27-game winning streak in district play. That streak came to an end as the Bobcats defeated the Mustangs 21-3 on a rainy Thursday night at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.
Cy-Fair took the opening kick and quickly got to work scoring in just 47 seconds. On the second play of the game, Junior tailback Jaelon Woods took it around the left side for a 60 yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 early.
Cy-Ranch then drove down to the 49 yard line but a false start penalty turned fourth and one into fourth and six and the Mustangs would punt it away. Both teams would punt on their next drives before Cy-Fair broke it open on a 66 yard pass from Cameron Arnold to Christian Richmond to move the ball down to the five yard line. Three plays later, Arnold would sneak it in from a yard to make it 14-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Mustangs suffered a huge loss as standout running back Willie Eldridge appeared to suffer a broken leg on the return. Cy-Ranch would then punt it away but the ball would be fumbled by the returner and recovered by the Mustangs. However, the Mustangs would have to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Kyle Burns to make the score 14-3.
Cy-Fair drove down the field to the 35-yard line but failed to convert on fourth down giving the ball to Cy-Ranch. Cy-Ranch drove all the way down to the Bobcat 30. But the 47-yard field goal fell short as the last few second ran off the clock ending the half at a score of 14-3.
The Mustangs would receive the second half kickoff looking for some better results offensively. But they would not get it as the drive stalled on fourth down. However, the defense was able to keep their hopes alive as they forced the Bobcats to go three and out.
But the Mustang offense made yet another mistake as sophomore running back Elias Pino fumbled the handoff and Cy-Fair recovered. That set up a one yard touchdown by Jaelon Woods to make the score 21-3. Just when things started to look like they were going in Cy-Ranch’s favor, Kyle Bell stepped in front of a Fred Brooks pass for the interception. Both teams would punt on their next possessions to end the third quarter.
The clock would then run down to triple zeros as the sun had set on Cy-Ranch’s district win streak, ending it at 27. Cy-Fair improves to 3-0 and will face Jersey Village(1-1) next Thursday at Pridgeon Stadium in Houston. Cy-Ranch drops to 2-1 and will face Cypress Creek(1-1) next Thursday at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.
