Thirty-six months later, ‘Bama’s cream has risen to the top and joined by an FBS Independent, a recent national champion, and a second Southeastern Conference team.
Texas Christian University’s improbable loss to Iowa State on Saturday in Ames ensured the previously No. 4 Horned Frogs plummeted down the polls and spoiled the Big 12’s opportunity to add a third Power 5 Conference to the mix.
When the College Football Playoff Poll was released Tuesday, though, TCU found itself firmly at No. 8 — behind Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Penn State and ahead of Wisconsin and Miami.
Alabama is No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25, followed by Georgia, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Clemson, Penn State, Oklahoma, and Miami. TCU is No. 10.

The Big Ten leads all conferences with three teams in the top 10, followed by the ACC (2), Big 12 (2), and SEC (2).The Pac-12 is not represented inside of the top 10.
FBS Independent Notre Dame is one of the three non-Power 5 conferences in the top 25. The American Athletic Conference’s University of Central Florida and Memphis, at No. 15 and No. 22, respectively, are the others.
If the rankings stay as is, the SEC could play itself for the national title in a playoff that only had two Power 5 Conferences total.
