Annapolis,MD- The SMU Mustangs (6-3,3-2) will be on the road this week, as they square off against the Navy Midshipmen.
SMU dropped a heartbreaker last week against UCF 31-24. While Temple took down Navy (5-3,3-3), 34-26. The Mustangs will look to rebound this week, as the game kicks off at 2:30pm CST and will be aired on CBSSN.
SMU hasn’t been very good on the defensive side of the ball this season, as it is the 109 team nationally in points allowed per game. The SMU defense will have added pressure this week, as it prepares to slow down the Midshipmen’s triple option offense.
The SMU air raid offense is firing on all cylinders. Led by former Midway Panthers standout quarterback Ben Hicks, who is averaging close to 310 yards per game. SMU has a trio of receivers for Hicks to choose from in Cortland Sutton, Trey Quinn and James Proche.
Navy is riding a three-game losing streak. It’s uncertain if the Midshipmen will have star quarterback Zach Abey available Saturday as he suffered a shoulder injury against Temple. If he is unable to go against the Mustangs, then the Midshipmen could be in trouble.
Defensively Navy has struggled in the secondary against conference opponents. The Midshipmen have allowed 30-plus points to opponents over the last three games. Opposing quarterbacks have averaged 8.8 yards per attempt.
Last season Navy put 75 points up on the Mustangs in Dallas and that can’t sit well with the defensive players still on the SMU roster. Look for the Mustangs to rebound after last week and get redemption against the Midshipmen.
