On the first play from scrimmage, El Paso El Dorado quarterback Cedarious Barfield fell to the turf with a knee injury on a play that resulted in a Logan Acosta interception. That play set the tone for the Midland Lee Rebels as they shut out the Aztecs 63-0 on Friday night in the Class 6A Division I bi-district round.
“Coach Hartman emphasized that we had to start fast,” Acosta said, “You have to go out there and give it your all from the very first play and that’s what we did.”
It was all Midland Lee on this Friday night at the SAC and on offense it was the Colby Standard show. Following the Acosta interception, Colby Standard ran the first play from scrimmage for a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0.

El Dorado tried to rally with sophomore quarterback Christopher Bustillos but the Rebels defense took advantage as Trey Jacobo intercepted a 30-yard pass for a touchdown to make it 14-0.
Standard would continue to go to work in the first half, throwing a 30-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Madrid and running for two scores in the second quarter to make it 35-0 at the half. Standard finished with 290 total yards and four touchdowns before being taken out of the game in the third quarter.
“Tonight, everything was just clicking,” Standard said, “It all starts with the offensive line with run blocking to give our guys a chance to make plays from the backfield. We just executed very well tonight.”
“Colby is one of the major reasons why this team has turned around as quickly as he has,” Hartman said of his senior quarterback, “When the game is on the line, you want the ball is in hands. He has no fear and his team feeds off of that.”

And has been the case all night, the Rebel defense shut down the depleted Aztec offense and continued to assert their will on El Dorado. Midland Lee would add a fumble recovery on an Elijah Prince 30-yard interception return for a score. The Rebels would add touchdown runs from Avery Akbar and Ymari Collins to cap off the scoring. As for the defense, it is their third playoff shutout in program history.
“We’ve been talking with our defense about doing their job and doing it at a high level and they did that tonight,” Hartman said, “When you can score twice on defense and force five turnovers, you can win games.”

The win marks the first playoff win for the Rebels since 2013 and for the senior class. They’ll also have the chance to play one more game at home as they will host Arlington Lamar on Satruday at 2 p.m. CST at Grande Communications Stadium.
“It’s an amazing feeling to win this game and to get one more home game,” Standard said, “After we lost our last home game, we get a chance at redemption and it would mean the world to get the win on our home field next week.”
