Each week UTSA coach Frank Wilson meets with the media and answers questions. This week was after a win, the first since October 28. Since, the Roadrunners have been looking for win No. 6, which it now has after its 9-7 Marshall win.
Now, UTSA looks to finish its season on a high note. As Frank Wilson will tell you, it’s got a good amount of pressure off its back now.
“It feels good. In a sense, yeah, you know, just so grateful,” Wilson said of being bowl eligible. “The hidden stuff — that it’s so obvious when we’ve played well and fall short to say ‘we didn’t finish, we gotta learn how to finish’ and it happens one time, two times, four times, and then to come in and we’re pressed against the wall and have to respond and have to finish, and we do so, it’s a great feeling because all of those times that it’s happened to us truly have been teachable moments.”
Saturday was a big win not only for bowl eligibility, but for the seniors as well. With it being the final game at the Alamodome for this group, a lot was on their minds.
Before the game last week, senior defensive end Marcus Davenport said he wouldn’t let the emotions flow until after the game. This week, coach Wilson said the team had dedicated the game toward the seniors for all they have given the university.
“Saturday morning, I shared the stage with our seniors and several of them got up and spoke to the team about this moment, so that was a big deal for us,” Wilson said.
Next up, is Louisiana Tech (5-6, 3-4). With a win, Louisiana Tech would become bowl eligible as well. Coach Wilson says though UTSA has reached six wins, it wants to get to seven to ensure it isn’t one of the teams that could possibly be left out.
“We want to get to seven wins,” Wilson said. “Seven wins will guarantee a bowl bid.”
The Bulldogs beat UTSA 63-35 last year, despite the Roadrunners putting up 21 points in the first quarter. The Roadrunners are trying their best to keep the same from happening.
“We crawled our way back in it, got it within a 14-point game, then tried an onside kick and they take it back to extend it 20, then score again late in the game, so yeah we remember that feeling,” Wilson said.
