SAN MARCOS, Texas — It’s tough to play a team with one Division I running back. When the opponent has two of them, good luck.
Angleton High School used more than 300 yards rushing from two backs to earn a Friday night 56-14 victory against Corpus Christi Flour Bluff at Bobcat Stadium. It also earned the Wildcats a fourth-round playoff berth in the UIL playoffs.
Angleton rode Texas-bound B. J. Foster (8 carries, 155 yards, 2 TD) and SMU-commit Tamerik Williams (14 carries, 182 yards, 3 TD) to the victory.
“It was nice to get B. J. (Foster) back,” Angleton coach Ryan Roark said. “He hadn’t played in five weeks and having him tonight gave us a different dynamic. The touchdown we scored late in the second quarter, we didn’t throw him the ball, but we lined him up out there wideout and they double-covered him, left our tight end wide open up the seam. So he didn’t score the touchdown, but he caused the touchdown. So it’s nice having him back out there.”
It could’ve been a different ball game if not for three first half turnovers forced by the Wildcats. Flour Bluff was marching down the field on its opening drive but fumbled at the Angleton 15-yard line. Junior safety Jason Williams picked it up and returned it to the Hornets three. Williams punched it in the next play.
Flour Bluff responded with an eight-play, 71-yards touchdown drive, ending with senior running back Simeon Wells scoring from a yard out. The Wildcats came right back with a quick 59-yard scoring drive that culminated with a crazy play.
It started with junior quarterback Seth Cosme handing it off to Williams, who handed it back off to Cosme. Cosme then threw over the biting defense to senior wide receiver Cameron Dilworth for a 31-yard touchdown.
The Hornets started driving again but Angleton senior linebacker Sincere Jackson forced another fumble at his team’s 33-yard line which was recovered by senior safety Marlin White.
After trading scores, Flour Bluff was in position to tie the game late in the first half.
But Angleton senior cornerback My’Kell Ross came up with a crucial play. He intercepted Flour Bluffs pass in the end zone. The Wildcats quickly raced the other way with a seven-play, 92-yard scoring drive that ended with Cosme finding junior Joshual Ellis for a 21-yard touchdown. Roark described it after the game.
“The difference between it being 28-14 [in our favor at halftime] to being down 21-14 [were] those three turnovers,” Roark said. “They were huge. Fortunately, for us, that’s the way we’ve been doing it all year long. We’ve been very opportunistic and coming up with turnovers in crucial situations.”
Angleton outscored Flour Bluff 28-0 in the second half as Williams and Foster began battering the Hornet resistance, while the Wildcat defense started showing its teeth.
“[I’m] incredibly proud,” Roark said. “These guys gave us all we wanted and then some the first quarter and a half, and our kids responded to the challenge in the second half.”
Flour Bluff can take solace in the fact it gained 370 yards against a defense that had been allowing 184.6 yards per game going into Friday. Wells rushed for 119 yards on 23 carries to go with his score. Junior quarterback Braden Sherron completed 16-of-24 passes for 191 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Senior wide receivers Taggert Peel (four catches, 81 yards), Jacob Soliz (four catches, 53 yards, touchdown) and Brendan Suckley (four catches, 39 yards) all made plays against Angleton’s secondary.
Cosme completed 5-of-10 passes for 60 yards and two scores to compliment the Angleton running game. Do-it-all senior Evrin Hawkins had two rushes for 37 yards, including a 25-yard score on a reverse where he juked multiple Flour Bluff defenders on the way to the end zone.
