NEW YORK — Baker Mayfield is really good. So good, he was voted as the Associated Press Player of the Year.
In a year where Mayfield is possibly the favorite to take home the Heisman, he has been one of the most captivating players on the field. The Lake Travis product threw for 4,340 yards and 41 touchdowns, only being intercepted five times. He is the fourth Oklahoma quarterback to win the award since 1998. The other three are Sam Bradford, Jason White and Josh Huepel.
The former walk-on Mayfield received 51-first-place votes from the 56 voters, totaling up to 157 points. Bryce love and Lamar Jackson were far behind, as Love was in second place after receiving 83 points.
Mayfield, Love, and Jackson are also the finalists for the Heisman.
The quarterback will look to wrap up his record-breaking college career with a championship win. The first step is against Georgia in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.
