Week Six 5A Team of the Week: La Porte
5A Team of the Week: La Porte Bulldogs
A year after finishing 5-5, La Porte has come hot out of the gates in 2023. The Bulldogs currently sit at 5-1 and are off to their best start since 2015.
This past week, they faced a tough test against a Kingwood Park team that beat them 55-0 a year ago.
However, this year, it was a very different ball game. La Porte jumped out to a 27-14 lead, but the Panthers fought the back to tie the game at 27 and force overtime.
But after Kingwood Park missed a field goal on its opening possession, La Porte took full advantage as Ricky Sandolph scored the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard run. Sandolph finished the 33-27 victory with 100 yards rushing and four touchdowns, while cornerback Jaylon Fisher had a pick-six for the Bulldog defense.
Sandolph also had some help on the ground as running back Tyresse Barnes rushed for 53 yards and wide receiver Landon Kay added another 51 yards on the ground.
La Porte wins their 5th straight as the Bulldogs escape overtime with a win over visiting Kingwood Park.

With one more win this season, La Porte will have its most victories in a season since 2016. Currently, the Bulldogs are on track for their first playoff berth since 2017. Next up, they’ll have another stout test as they travel to take on an undefeated Port Arthur Memorial side this Friday.
