Area Round 6A Team of the Week: Cy-Fair

6A Team of the Week: Cy-Fair Bobcats

History was not on Cy-Fair’s side last Friday considering Katy hadn’t lost in the area round of playoffs since 2001. The Bobcats themselves had lost in the area round the past four years as well.

But led by quarterback Trey Owens, a Texas commit, Cy-Fair threw the history books out the window.

Owens connected with receiver Owen Carter for a touchdown with just 43 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 21 and send it into overtime.

From there, Cy-Fair senior running back Jamel Nickerson scored on a three-yard run, and the Bobcat defense stopped Katy on fourth down to secure a historic 28-21 victory.

Owens finished with 298 yards passing and three touchdowns. Carter had 11 catches for 89 yards and that game-tying touchdown, while Connor Porter also made a number of key plays on the night. He led the Bobcats with 110 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

With Owens and his army of talented receivers powering this Bobcat offense, they will not be an easy out this postseason. Next up on the docket to try and stop them is arguably the favorite for the 6A Division I state title: the North Shore Mustangs.

Their regional semifinal showdown will kick off at 2:00 this Friday at NRG Stadium in Houston.
