5A Team of the Week: Milby Buffs
When the Class of 2025 arrived at Milby, it signaled a change for the Buffs’ football program. For the first time in years, there were enough numbers to field a “true freshmen team.”
From that moment onward, that group of players continued to drive the football program forward. Years of work that culminated this past Saturday when Milby defeated Spring Woods 51-28 to earn its first playoff berth since 2000.
“Getting back to the playoffs is huge for our program. We have such hard working kids at Milby and to see them earn success, finally get over the hump, and get in is a great thing for us,” Milby head coach Matthew Puente said. “[The seniors] have worked extremely hard and are seeing the benefits of all that hard work. Mix in some 10th & 11th graders at key positions and, most importantly, having everyone understand and believe in TheBuffWay, and success followed.”
Senior quarterback Michael Hernandez was a big reason for that success on Saturday. He threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns, while racking up another 143 yards on the ground. Fellow senior running back Xavier Flores was just a busy, finishing with 75 rushing yards on 21 carries.

In the passing attack, Isaiah Washington, Albert Sample, and Artavion Davis all had touchdown receptions.
Now that they’ve qualified for the dance, the Buffs will turn their attention towards trying to earn their program’s first playoff win since 1990. They’ll look to pull an upset to do just that when they head to Lufkin this Saturday at 1:00.
