As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fight for the top spot in the NFC South, the team’s quarterback will now fight his own battle… off the field.

Bucs quarterback and former Lake Travis graduate Baker Mayfield has filed a federal lawsuit against his father’s financial firm. The $11.7 million suit alleges the company, owned by his James Mayfield, failed to pay back a sum of $11,741,000 plus interest.

Between the years of 2018 to 2021, the company, Camwood Capital Management Group, took $12.2 million from the personal account of Mayfield and his wife. The lawsuit claims the money was taken “without authorization, proper documentation, or adequate accounting of the transactions.” The money was used to fund various business interests, including purchasing several Austin-based companies.

Earlier in the year, the transaction was already investigated and both parties entered into a settlement agreement on January 23, 2024, in which Camwood Capital admitted to the unauthorized transfer and agreed to a repayment plan starting September 2024.

Yet, as of this writing, the Mayfields haven’t received a dime, suing over breaching the settlement agreement.

“To date, Camwood Capital has not repaid even one dollar under the Settlement Agreement, Defendants have failed to refinance their existing loan, and Defendants have not provided Plaintiffs with access to their books and records,” the lawsuit states.

With LT, Mayfield was a stud, leading the Cavaliers to the Class 4A Division I state championship in 2011 before graduating in 2013.

Despite the gridiron success, even in high school, Mayfield was dealing with family woe. In his his senior season, his father hit hard times as a private equity consultant and was forced to sell the family home. Before graduating, Baker, his older brother Matt, and their parents moved to four different rentals during the remainder of the year.

According to the Camwood Capital website, James still resides in Lake Travis with his wife of 35+ years and their dogs. As a student athlete, James has his own history with Texas high school football, competing with Carrollton.

Camwood Capital is currently refusing to speak to the media.
