4A Team of the Week: La Vernia Bears
Last year’s 4A Division I runners-up are no more. Boerne appeared primed for another deep playoff run this year, but La Vernia had other ideas.
The Bears rushed for 235 yards and six touchdowns as they overcame the Greyhounds 42-31 this past Friday.
Quarterback Keegan Hajek did it all for the Bears as he threw for 151 yards and added another 49 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Running back Isaiah Cisneros was the Bears’ leading rusher with 84 yards and two touchdowns, while receiver Colton Schmid provided a big spark for the offense. He caught five passes for 95 yards and also had two carries for 75 yards.

Defensively, safety Kolby Gates had 16 tackles, while linebacker Ethan Dylla had three tackles for loss.
Having vanquished the favorite in Region IV, La Vernia will be a threat to win the first region championship in school history. The Bears made the regional final in 2011, 2013, and 2018 but fell short each time.
It will aim to make yet another regional final when it takes on Davenport this Friday in San Antonio at 7:00.
