BERKELEY — Type in Vic Enwere’s name and you’re likely to find multiple videos of him coughing up the football before hitting the end zone against the Longhorns. The referees said that Texas didn’t make a “clear recovery”. Cal ran out the clock, and went on to win 50-43.

For the UT faithful, this was a devastating lost. But, for a kid from from Missouri City, TX, it was a very lucky and rewarding win.

Enwere, a junior running back, contributed big time in Cal’s win over Charlie Strong’s Longhorns. He carried the ball 18 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

In high school, Enwere was a three-star recruit, who chose Cal over Michigan, Duke, Vanderbilt and Michigan State. Notice something about those schools he mulled over? He’s pretty smart.

The only Texas schools to offer him were Texas State, North Texas, SMU, Rice and Houston. The 6-foot- 1, 240 pound back put all those major home state programs on notice when he put on a show against Texas. Yes, he did make an errant mistake by letting go of the ball a little too early before crossing into the end zone, but he made bigger contributions in that game that should overshadow that small slip up.

The Golden Bears’ running back has enjoyed a solid college career in the Bay Area. Last season, he touched the ball 106 times, finishing with 505 yards and eight touchdowns. He already has 255 yards on 38 attempts in 2016, and is averaging a career best 6.7 yards per carry.

Cal hits the road for the next game, where they will face an Arizona State team who is sitting at 3-0. So far, the Sun Devils’ defense has been stingy when it comes to the run game. They haven’t allowed a single player to reach 100 rushing yards yet. Will Enwere be the first to eclipse the 100 yard mark against ASU?

We will have to wait and see how the Texas-bred tailback does against a Pac-12 opponent like ASU, but one thing is certain: He’ll make sure to not let go of the ball until he’s in the endzone.
