Drew Borsellino Of Viva The Matadors Talks Texas Tech’s Recruiting Class And National Signing Day

National Signing Day is coming up quickly. Is there anyone who Texas Tech could potentially flip or anyone who could decommit?

I had a feeling that it could’ve bee DB Adam Beck, and that turned out to be true. Last week he received an offer from Colorado State and stated he’s still committed to Texas Tech, but his recruitment was still open. Take that as you want, but at this time of the year most recruits start shutting down their recruitment. He has already decommitted once from Houston, Texas Tech could be next.

Texas Tech obviously has some serious needs across the offensive line and all over the defense. Does this recruiting class fill those?

This recruiting class is offensive line and defensive back heavy. O-linemen such as Jack Anderson, Will Farrar, and Dawson Deaton are already on campus and could make a big impact immediately. The secondary is receiving help as well, there are 7 DBs in this class including stud JUCO products Octavious Morgan and Jaylon Lane. Both Morgan and Lane could very easily end up being Texas Tech’s starting corners before it’s all said and done. I’d like to see a few defensive line commits before National Signing Day, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Of all these recruits, who has the best chance of starting as a freshman?

Jack Anderson has the best chance to step in and start on the offensive line. The O-line was porous last year, and if Patrick Mahomes wasn’t so nimble on his feet the season could’ve gone a lot worse. Look for Farrar and Deaton to get opportunities as well.

Out of this class, who do you think will be the most successful while at Texas Tech?

Going outside of the box on this one with WR Bronson Boyd. Boyd is the lone wide receiver commit in this class which is unusual for the Red Raiders. At 6’3” and 185 pounds, Boyd should be given the opportunity to work both the slot and outside spots. While the receiving core is crowded now, Boyd could be the team’s top receiver in a year or two.

Texas Tech has seen extreme turnover at many positions. How will these guys fill those spots?

There are 9 JUCO commits in this class and 12 early enrollees on campus already. The JUCO commits will be able to plug gaps for a year or two while younger talent develops. It’s not common to see almost half of your class be JUCO products, but these guys will be able to step in and help right away. As I mentioned earlier, Morgan and Lane could end up being your starting corners this season.

Who’s your personal favorite recruit out of this class?

My favorite recruit is QB Xavier Martin.
How is Texas Tech looking for 2018?

It’s too hard to tell at the moment. It’s looking promising, but losing Stanley Hackett hurts. A good season will for sure help on the recruiting front.
